Delano Mountain, Fall 2003: At 2094 feet above sea level this the highest point in eastern Pennsylvania (outside of a few similar "peaks" in the Poconos). Part of the Locust Mountain ridge, it merges with the Spring Mountain plateau nearby. It's called "Bear's Head" on the topographical maps. The taller tower at right hosts a myriad antenna array. The smaller structure at left is an old forest fire watchtower that we used to climb in more energetic times. The northernmost tributary of the Schuylkill River begins in a small stream off the right hand slope of this mild rise. Quakake Valley looking east from the Quakake-Delano road, January, 2003. Directly ahead is the overpass bridge over Interstate Highway 81. The lake in the distance is Still Creek Dam, a Tamaqua reservoir. The Broad Mountain rises in the far distance.
View of Locust-Quakake Valley in Rush Township from the top of Spring Mountain. The small rise at center is the "Switchback Peak" around which the coal trains made their way from the mountain coalfields to Quakake Junction and the yards at Tamanend. Past that in direct succession are Locust, Sharp and the Blue Mountains. The "Co-Gen" behind the Silverbrook coal mine wasteland on a spur of Spring Mountain. This shot was taken from the same viewpoint as the picture at left, just moved slightly to the left (east). This modern cogeneration plant extracts the burnable anthracite culm from the old Silverbrook mine works and burns it to produce steam.
