Hazleton, PA

Hazleton, PA City Hall, modern version. Hazleton, PA City Hall, earlier version.
February, 2003: The Hazleton, PA city library on N. Church St. This is the older original building that was donated to the city by the coal operator Markle family. The newer addition is at the left of the picture. The old Hazleton High School, locally nicknamed "The Castle". An impressive old style building, it has a grand auditorium which hosted many a Community Concert. These days its future seems to be perpetually in doubt, as funding for upkeep and preservation is always problematic.

March, 2000: Hazleton, PA: The old Hazle Township High School at 15th and North Church Streets as seen from the St. Joseph's Slovak parish's cemetery. Famed movie actor Jack Palance is a 1937 alumnus of this school.

The gravesite of great-grandfather Josephus Payer is somewhere in the cemetery near the Church Street wall. We have not found it yet. His burial date was 1892 ... among the earliest interments. Most of the markers dating from those days are unreadable.
