First Growth? Hemlock
These trees should be preserved

Tree #2. It's about the same size as tree #1 and looks almost identical. To better demonstrate the tree's height, this picture is a composite of three shots taken from about fifty feet away at increasing camera elevation angles. The crowns of both trees look to be in pretty good shape

Deadfalls, the last of the winter snow and snow-melt swamp surrounding the big trees. It is quite difficult to hike through this area because of the downed timber. Fifty years ago this location was almost park-like in appearance. Evidence of last winter's heavy ice storm can be plainly seen, although much of the fallen timber seems to have been been cut down by chain saw. It looks like an abortive and incomplete attempt was made to lumber the place by cutting down the smaller trees and leaving them lie. The watershed was fenced at one time and trespassing was prohibited. This fact is obviously the reason that these great trees were preserved. Their future is now doubtful.
