First Growth? Hemlock
These trees should be preserved
Possibly a first growth hemlock tree shown here with granddaughter Emily. Two similar trees are located in the middle of the McAdoo, PA local reservoir watershed. (See map below). Emily's about five feet tall now and using her as a scale, we estimate the height of the tree at 70 feet. The diameter of the tree at her waist height is 4.5 feet. This is tree #1. See tree #2 on page 2.

Close-up of the base of tree #1. The radius is 2.25 feet. If the rings are spaced at 0.125 inches, this puts the age of the tree at 216 years. Sixteenth inch (0.0625) ring spacing would give an age of 432 years.

Map of the McAdoo, PA, 105 acre local reservoir watershed. At one time the pond received water from the much larger #8 Reservoir west of Kelayres. It is not immediately known whether this pond is still the main source of distribution for the borough. The 1.5 mile, previously fenced perimeter bounds are S. Hancock St. in McAdoo, The Kelayres Road, 4th Street and James St. in Kelayres, W. Blaine St. and E. Sherman St. in McAdoo. The large X marks the site of the ancient hemlock trees, approximately 400 yards in from the Kelayres side, 300 yards in from behind Boyer's Market in McAdoo. The photos were taken on 04/01/2005.
